Homeschooling is Cheaper Than Public School, And More Fun!

I have heard many times that people have heard (the myth!) that it is too expensive to homeschool their child(ren.) In my previous blog post, I went over LadyBug's current curriculum, Fun Schooling by Thinking Tree, and how it works for us. In this post I will cover a few ways homeschooling is cheaper than public school and how it helps in the long run! Lets get to it!

1.) Curriculum
Some boxed curriculum's can get pricey if bought together, but did you know there are an abundance of FREE homeschooling websites for your children that will meet all your homeschooling needs? How awesome is that!? So you technically only have to spend money on the tools you really want.

A few of my favorite free homeschooling resources are:

2.) Supplies
Most people are aware of the never ending "School supply list" you receive each year before school starts. It always seems to grow with multiple rolls of paper towels, dry erase markers, multiple glue sticks, packs of markers and crayons, and even hand sanitizer. With homeschooling, you only buy what you need, saving you tons of money in the long run and you will know exactly who is using the supplies and where. No scissors being shoved into glue sticks here! (haha!)

3.) Volunteer Time
Lets be honest, not everyone has the time, or wants to be available, to volunteer in a classroom of 30 kids. Time is valuable in my household, where I can be working on my business, spending it with my family and husband, or getting housework done. Some schools require parents to volunteer X amount of hours to the classroom, and in my opinion, time is money or just as valuable.

4.) Class Parties
Weather it be a birthday, a holiday, or a class celebration, feeding 30 kids gets expensive. Drinks, snacks, cups and plates for teachers and kids, plus parents. Sometimes this will double over into Volunteer Time as well. Use what you have at home when you homeschool and skip the cost!

5.) Back To School Shopping
The average school aged american spends around $300 on back to school clothing each year. That is a lot of money if you have more than one child in school! Everyone likes to have the newest fashion statement jeans or shoes, but homeschool kids don't feel the pressure or need to have clothing like that. That doesn't mean that they don't appreciate the newest designer jeans, because they might, they just aren't socially influenced by peer pressure as much as others.

6.) School Lunches
School lunches can get pricey for what they are worth, ranging from $2.00-$5.00. So, each child can spend at the most $25 each week on lunches, so potentially $100 a month on school lunch. That is absurd! When schooling at home children have the opportunity to make better food choices and stay on budget.

7.) College Credits
Universities are accepting homeschooled kids at an exceptionally faster rate then ever before! They are said to be more well rounded and more qualified than their peers for their selected majors. When looking at the collective data, homeschoolers graduated with more credits than their peers, and entered college with an average savings of $3,500 in credits!

8.) Family Time
During the school year growing up, my family would always take our family vacations during spring break so we wouldn't lost any days of school. There were long lines, crowded spaces, and hiked up air fare. The best thing about homechooling is you can take vacations whenever, even in the off season and you can turn anywhere (even DISNEY, seriously!) into a learning experience!

I hope this helped you with some costs attached to homeschooling, as always, Happy Learning!

Why Homeschooling?

Why homeschooling? So many people ask me this question when I tell them LadyBug is reading, or doing math at 4. Why not private school or charter schools? What about socialization, friends and other “life skills?” This face right here is why we homeschool LadyBug. The pure joy of learning about one of her many loves, lizards, in our own backyard anytime she wants. We’ve caught and released many types of lizards, geckos, even built them homes and fed them! Nothing like live science class at 8am! The choice to homeschool was easy for me. Growing up my mom specialized in early childhood education and ran an in home daycare, so she could be home with us before sending my siblings and I to public school. Our childhood was filled with arts and crafts, and lots of Waldorf curricula. In school I excelled in English, and art, but science and math were always hard for me, especially with numbers. During middle school, we learned I had dyscalculia, which is a learning disability with numbe
